The Wise card, when I added it to Google Pay, worked right away on first tap to purchase lunch at a Interac/Visa tap terminal. I also got my physical Wise card working. For the physical card, before you can start using tap to pay, you need to first insert the chip and enter the correct pin to make a purchase. I bought some Kimbap and paid using chip and pin, and now my card is activated and can be used for tap as well. I recommend ordering the physical card as it takes a few weeks to arrive, and it will be helpful if you go out of country to take advantage of the better foreign exchange rates.
If you use Tangerine for banking, you can also add the Wise Canadian bank account details as an External Account in Tangerine, which lets you transfer money to and from your Wise account with 0 fees. I recommend doing this well in advance as it takes about a week to get connected properly.
You go into Tangerine app, choose connect external account, and add your Wise Canadian account details. Then Tangerine will send a few small amounts to Wise, and you need to enter those amounts in the Tangerine web interface. Then the account will be linked so you can push and pull funds from Wise using the Tangerine online banking.
