Create, Connect, and Care – becoming empowered through engaging with a community

Geoff Peters from geoffmobile.com gives an inspiring speech as part of his Toastmasters “Competent Communicator” Speech # 10.

Presented at Vancouver Toastmasters Club 59 tmclub59.com on June 25th 2012, in Kitsilano, Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Synopsis:

Have you ever felt powerless as an individual?

I am going to show you three ways YOU can be the person who sparks a movement, or the citizen who raises awareness and makes the world a better place. The three ways are: Create, Connect, and Care.

Toastmasters gives you power – the power to communicate, the power to listen, the power to lead. But none of this would exist if Ralph Smedley hadn’t done the first step – CREATE.

It is easier than ever to connect with others who share the same interests or goals.
Websites such as Toastmasters.org, Facebook, Meetup, Twitter, or even Youtube allow people to CONNECT.

But let’s say you created a community, and you connected with some amazing people, and you’re all fired up to go out and do something. All this energy and all this power you have is only good if you actually CARE about having a positive impact on the world.

You may be concerned about something in the world.
Do you want to save the environment? Do you care about the rights and freedoms of minorities? Do you care about helping people in your community?

You’ve taken the first step through Toastmasters of getting the power to speak and listen. Bring your Toastmasters skills back into the community and start making a difference.

After you Create a community with similar interests or goals, you can Connect with others, and then you must direct this energy towards something you really Care about.

Through the new tools and leverage available to us today, it has never been easier to start a revolution.
Join us.

Blu light Synth jam Roland GAIA SH-01 by Geoff Peters June 24 2012

Geoff from geoffmobile.com plays his synthesizer, the Roland GAIA SH-01, for around 30 minutes in an improvised practice / jam session of original musical ideas.

This synth is really versatile. I like it better than the Korg MS-2000B in that it has much higher polyphony. But the Roland definitely has a different character than the Korg. I’d say by default the Roland is more “polite” sounding, which is good when blending with other instruments such as acoustic instruments. But it definitely can be made to sing / stand out / or even scream (for example with a sawtooth or square wave + distortion + detuning).

My favorite tone to use (on both synths) is the Triangle wave. The tri-wave on the Roland sounds more mellow and less piercingly “pure” than the Korg, but the advantage of the Roland is that I can get it to sound almost like a Rhodes keyboard or a Wurlitzer. It’s nice that they provide the “variation” button below the Wave select button, which adds different characters as well.

If you are a GAIA user, and want to trade patches, feel free to email me at geoff@gpeters.com

Also if you would like the entire uncompressed WAV version of this performance (for remixing or use in student films, etc) please also email me at geoff@gpeters.com and I’ll happily send it to you.

Thanks for watching!
Cheers,
Geoff

How to make money from Youtube monetization – Geoffmobile.com tips

Geoff from geoffmobile.com shares how he recently enabled Video Monetization for his videos on Youtube and describes how he is making money from creating and sharing videos on Youtube.

Tips:
-Enable Pre-roll ads, for 10 to 15 times the revenue vs In-video overlay ads.
-Don’t monetize videos where you don’t own the rights to the music, logos, or other content.
-Always get release forms from all actors or other people appearing in your videos. Search ehow.com for “Actor Release Form” for tips.
-If using Creative Commons content in your video, ensure it does not say “Non commercial” in the license. I have found that CC Attribution (*not* Non Commercial) is ok with youtube monetization.
-Create content regularly, and with diverse subjects and ideas. Be creative, and hopefully some of your videos will go viral, leading to several thousand dollars of revenue :)
-Also, seek out info on how to make more compelling content, be aware of your target audience or why someone would care to watch your videos.
