Speech outline:
“Paying for Attention — How to Make Money from Youtube” by Geoff Peters
Intro: Wow! I made almost $100 last month on Youtube. Youtube is becoming a serious media platform. Genius of Optional ads. How to attract attention to your videos.
Youtube is becoming a serious media platform
Content Size: 72 hours of video are uploaded every minute.
800 million viewers watch 4 billion hours every month
Partners: 30,000+ partners in 27 countries. Anyone can become a partner now.
Millions of dollars are paid out to partners per year.
Hundreds of partners making six figures a year.
Partner revenue has doubled four years in a row.
3 billion videos a week worldwide have some sort of monetization.
2. The genius of optional ads.
“Skip this ad”. Shows before your video plays.
When advertisers pay only when ads are watched, and viewers watch the ads they like, advertisers pay more.
YouTube is making as much revenue per hour as ads on cable TV in the U.S.
For 100 views, can make around $1.00. Last month I made almost $100 on Youtube, with only around 300-400 views per day.
3. How to attract attention to your videos:
What are YOU passionate about sharing? Finding your genuine self.
Filling a niche: Be generous. Creating useful, engaging content, answering questions people are looking for.
Creating beautiful art, music. I record videos of me playing the synthesizer and share my musical ideas. Shared with Roland Canada and UK and they really like my videos.
Exploring, Experimenting (Longer form videos).
Conclusion:
Youtube = Serious media platform.
Optional ads – big money and good for advertisers, users, and content creators.
Attracting attention – through following your passions, sharing and being generous.
Video is a very powerful way to share ideas and make the world a better place – use the tool for good!

Mike Macquisten and Steve Thorp vancouverurbanwinery.com co-founded the Vancouver Urban Winery in 2012.
This urban winery where we are tonight is the first of its kind in Vancouver and also operates as a unique special events space. The winery features 36 wine taps at the tasting bar where consumers can learn about British Columbia wines, and the exploding wine-on-tap category. Alongside the tasting bar is a boutique wine shop full of local items, wine merchandise, artisan foods and beverage and plenty of wine! The winery manufactures, packages, imports and distributes wine for multiple brands. The operations of FreshTAP, which specialize in packaging quality wines in stainless steel kegs for the emerging wine-on-tap category takes place within the Vancouver Urban Winery.
