Two ways of working – a quick productivity tip from geoffmobile

Here’s Geoff from geoffmobile.com with a short productivity tip.

Productivity tip: Two ways of working are:

1) Doing work right as it comes in (such as responding immediately to urgent requests or emails)

2) Working on tasks that you have already planned at some previous time, and putting incoming requests into your todo list so they can be handled at the appropriate time.

Either way of working is fine, but to be more effective in accomplishing your goals, I recommend trying to do more of 2). However if someone comes to my desk in person to ask a question that will take more than a few minutes, I usually ask them if they need the help right away or if it could wait until a later date.

How to decide what to do at any moment? – four factors to consider when determining your next task

Here’s Geoff from geoffmobile.com with a short productivity tip.

Productivity tip: To decide what to do at any moment, please consider these four factors:
1) Context / location (where are you, at your office, home, airport, etc. This will limit the kinds of tasks you can accomplish).
2) Time available – do you have 4 hours, 1 hour, 30 minutes, or 5 minutes? That will affect the kind of tasks you can do.
3) Energy available – two types of energy: Mental and physical. Will affect what tasks you will feel like doing and how well you can do them.
4) Priority – if all else is equal, look at which tasks are the highest priority / give the biggest “bang for the buck”.
